CNN —The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation on Friday said that Republic Bank has been closed by Pennsylvania state regulators, in what the FDIC said was the first US bank failure this year. “Philadelphia-based Republic First Bank (doing business as Republic Bank) was closed today by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect depositors, the FDIC entered into an agreement with Fulton Bank, National Association of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to assume substantially all of the deposits and purchase substantially all of the assets of Republic Bank,” the FDIC said in a statement. That makes Republic Bank (FRBK) far smaller than the regional bank failures that rocked the financial world last year. The FDIC said that Republic Bank was the first bank to fail in the United States since Citizens Bank in Sac City, Iowa, in November 2023.

At least one tornado struck parts of Nebraska on Friday afternoon, leading to the collapse of an industrial building, injuring at least three people and prompting a widespread emergency response, officials said, a day after tornadoes battered other parts of the Midwest. The Weather Service issued tornado warnings for much of Omaha, including the downtown area. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office responded to the industrial building at Garner Industries around 3 p.m. and found it “pretty much totally collapsed” with several people trapped inside, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said. Three people were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said, adding that roughly 70 people were inside when the tornado struck. The sheriff’s office also received reports of a derailed train in Waverly, Chief Houchin said, adding, “They didn’t require any emergency assistance, so we’re hoping it’s very minor.”

They built the wooden cart with bicycle tires and a kickstand in her parents' basement in 2016, maxing out her credit card's $1,500 limit to afford materials, and called it The Nitro Cart. That summer, they took it to any event that would take them, from sheep shearing events to farmers markets across Rhode Island, serving small batches of nitrogen-infused cold brew. To survive the winter, they partnered with local restaurants to install their nitro cold brew on tap. Here's how they built The Nitro Bar, from 80-hour workweeks to some TikTok virality and a lot of luck. HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and Republican David McCormick will be the only eligible names on ballots for the office in Pennsylvania's April primary after a ruling Friday by the state's highest court. The state Supreme Court rejected an appeal from a Republican candidate, Joe Vodvarka, who had been ordered off primary ballots by a lower court that found he had not received enough voter signatures to qualify. The state Supreme Court, in its two-line order, did not explain its decision. Courts earlier in March had already granted challenges to the paperwork of two other candidates filing for the primary ballot for U.S. Senate. Both Brandi Tomasetti, a Republican from Lancaster County, and William Parker, a Democrat from Allegheny County, were ordered off ballots.

Just like people of faith, not all atheists believe the same things. Because atheists are defined by what they don’t believe, it’s difficult to generalize what they do believe. What do atheists believe? Nearly a third of atheists believe humans have souls or spirits in addition to their physical body. It's hard to talk about atheists as a large group because they're defined by what they don't believe in.

AdvertisementFollowing a diet that mimics fasting for five days a month appeared to reverse people's biological age by two and a half years on average in a study. These factors can be used to measure biological age, the authors of the study published January 20 in Nature Communications, said. While chronological age refers to how many years someone has been alive, biological age is a measure of how well cells and tissues are functioning. On day one of the FMD, participants ate around 1,100 calories, and around 720 on days two to five. Cultivating a sensible exercise habit could achieve the same or even better results, Clancy said, and is maintainable into older age.
